This website will teach you some of the most important things that you need to know. Feel free to browse through the articles containing essential bearded dragon info. In the meantime, here are a few tips on caring for bearded dragons.
Housing
It's best to provide your beardie with the largest enclosure you can afford and have space for. A 10-15 gallon tank is good enough for a hatchling. However, adults need a 50-55 gallon terrarium. Since they're only semi-arboreal, the enclosure should be longer than it is tall. You can see our Terrarium and Cages in our

Light
Another important aspect of bearded dragon care is proper lighting. You need a special UVB light for your lizard. Without this, they can't manufacture vitamin D3 which is essential for calcium metabolism. In addition to UVB light, he will also need a bright daylight bulb. You should provide 14 hours of bright light and 10 hours of darkness. For a better understanding please read the article Bearded Dragon Lights UVB UVA
Temperature
Your dragon needs a temperature gradient in his enclosure. One side should be between 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit, while the other should be 95-100 degrees. At night, the temperature should drop into the low 70s. The basking area should be between 100 and 105 degrees.
Food
Feeding bearded dragons the proper diet is very important. They're omnivorous, so they eat fruits, vegetables, and insects. You can buy the insects or catch them from outside yourself. Catching them outside may pose a problem since they may have come into contact with pesticides which are harmful to your lizard. Learn more about the bearded dragon diet. Hi, I hae 2 beardys about and one (Moose) is acting odd. I came home today and she was under the UV lights in the corner. I tryed to pick her up but she ran to the other side of the cage and just hit it and kept tapping on the side. I also just put in crickets, but she wasnt even touching them. Usually she runs after them like my other one (Sunny). but today she wasnt even bothered. She turns a darker color when she gets ready to molt but I also notice that the tip of her head, right were he mouth is was a white color. Its not puffy or anything. Just white scales. I thought she might of been blinded some how, but I tested that and its not her eyes. Please Help!!
i got a beardy at the start of the year he is about 25 to 30 cm long and about a year old he has been fine up to now but a few weeks ago he started acting strange he is not eating very much and staying at the cool end of the tank under his log dome and sleeping more and digging at the sand ,he is well in himself he has good colour and bright eyes and very active when he has been out from what i have read i think he wants to start brumation do i have to let him brumate or not i am not sure what to do can you help
hears the thing with “michelle” and “kimberly” …both your dragons are goin through something called brumation.Brumation is a part in their life where they are now 80% meat 20% veggies to 20% meat 80% veggies they wont eat for at least a month i suggest you leave the dragon/s alone and let it do its thing …..its nothing bad that this is happening it lasts a month or two …you might get scared because your dragon will get very skinny ….but after he/she will be fine
I have a bearded dragon i got it the day before christmas 2009 I would like to know how can i tell if it is a girl or boy
My beardie Gizmo is shedding at the moment and is hiding underneath her branch alot! Also, whenever we put our hands in to stroke her or to pick her up she shows the aggressive posture or just runs away! I dont know if its because shes getting irritable because of her shed but its upsetting because we just dont understand why shes doing it? Have you got any advice on what it is and what we should/can do?
Sorry, just to add to my last comment!
Ive been told Gizmo is possibly a girl but shes still only a baby at the moment! Me and my boyfriend are thinking of getting another Beardy to see if this will calm her down and maybe give her a bit of company do you have any advice on this aswell please?
I just got a dragon and am wondering if I should mist him or not I have heard i don’t need to but should I?
nathan, personally i mist my dragon a couple of times a day at least. it stop them dehydrating as they dont really drink much water.
HI.
I just got a dragon and so did my boyfriend, both dragons are in the same tank and has got all the lighting and also got calcium powder that you dip the insects in. I was wondering how many times a week must i give it this calcium powder and how many times a week must we handle our dragons?
That’s teriffic and very well thought out. Generally I won’t make posts on blogs, However I have to congratulate you on this one. Awesome post
My heat light doesnt work anymore, and i need to change it with a new one, how long can a beardy go without the heat light?
ok. as far as misting goes. beardies hate humidity. spraying in the tank will cause humidity. they are desert animals after all so do not like this. if you are worried about them dehydrating give them a bath once a month. it is good exercise and they absorb the water through there skin. a water bowl should be made available as well. if u do want to mist them for adults do it once a day.
get a heat light as soon as possible they are desert animals and need heat but can go short periods of time without it. it may go into shut down until you get one
I have a beardie which has been in her stages of brumation but her eye has gone all funny, how do i go about getting it better??
hey i have a Bearded Dragon and i don’t now much about her and i just wont to give her what she need i need some help plz and thank you.
Just got a full grown Beardie , I have brought him into the house and he is in his original habitat, nothing is different other than one house to another. I was told that he hadn’t been handled a lot, and that he would need to be force fed. I have offered him banana and put a salad in the tank each day as well as offering him meal worms. The first few days he ate all by himself and definately no force feeding. Now, he is all lethargic and not wanting to eat. He also has had his beard go from light tan to black. What is going on? could it be the new environment with kids and other animals upsetting him, is he just stressing and need to be isolated or what?
Hi my bearded dragon isnt eating, hes nearly 2 is there something wrong with him x
Ha, that actually a Truly good suggestion. Many thanks so much for this!
It is considered unsanitary, the bugs that are usually edible are usually prepared in a way to make them such. They don’t know where the particular bug has been!
@ Janell: If you feed the dragon too many worms they sometimes wont eat for a while, at least from my experience it happened to my beardie, though i think it was from the super meal worm i fed her.
my dog indy nearly killed it and me and my friend are trying to care and save it.
Hi I’m gonna get a beardie for X mas and I am not sure what to call it or what gender I should get it .HELP!

I took my dragon to the “exotic” vet the other day. He was trembling and shaking when he tried to walk and his gait was all off. I suggested the book said it could be inner ear infection or bacterial infection; she didn’t want to consider that. She was going to blame me for metabolic bone disease, but then she had to admit his bones looked okay in x-ray. Then all his bloods came back okay. I have to force feed him vitamins. He hasn’t really eaten much. He does look like he has MBD but his tests are okay. I have not tried to give him a warm bath yet. Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience and cured it. I’ve had him five years now. Maybe he’s constipated? I’m reading these comments and it sounded like being blocked can cause that?

I Just got my Bearded Dragon on sunday. His (or her, I can’t tell yet) name is Pagona, wich is the proper term for a Bearded Dragon, but most people don’t know that. He’s very calm, and doesn’t try to get away from my hands.

hello i have just bought 2 bearded dragons and one appers very shy and lazy he not run to catch his food and he appears to stay in the same place all the time,we have noticed his jew hangs dwn 2, we dnt no much bout bearded dragons so a lil information but be very gr8 tar xx
Okay it’s no really Difficult to under stand whats going on with all of your problems bearded dragons do not need to be misted or put in the bath once a month as they are from dessert regions misting or bathing youre dragon can cause serious problems as there skin absorbs the water and as they cant sweat the moisture stays in the skin and causes skin problems they get all there fluid from veg or a water dish so keep them dry. As for not eating there are a number of things that could be happening, if the tank is not properly heated this really affects your dragon as it’s cold blooded therefore can’t digest food properly, if theres no heat your dragon could also be impacted this is caused by you’re dragon eating sand so see a vet if you think this is happening see a vet ! , if you’re dragons is shedding and you wonder why it doesn’t want to be handled it’s simple shedding it’s skin is a stress full time for your dragon or any reptile the last thing it wants is to be touched so just let nature take it’s course and your dragon will be fine. If your dragon is opening it’s mouth or going black under it’s chin when you go to pick its up this is a sign of aggression or discomfort it’s normal some dragons are more aggresive then others, just take your time when trying to Handel your dragon as you have to earn it’s trust start by placing your hand in the opposite end of it’s tank to show it your not a threat soon enough your dragon will come to you be patient, sexing you dragon can be difficult especially if it’s not tame males have larger heads compaird to it’s body if you can pick up your dragon look close to the base of it’s tale if it has a promenent v shape of glands it’s female, if no v and balls male. Hope this helps enjoy you bearded dragons. One love!
lee in response to you question, female bearded dragons tend to get on very well, how ever you may find the older female may be less tolerant of the younger ones behaviour. As she will be full grown and the younger one quite small be careful there are no injures caused to the smaller one. Also to all the questions about the beardes not eating the meal worms temp them with some wax worms, there much more appealing how ever dont over feed them on wax worms as they are high in fat content and can be addictive.
Preston you could try looking on gumtree for your area people are always adverizing them good luck
Hello, just bought a bearded dragon, having spent years as a snake owner. I know how to look after snakes, but he’s a little different, and he HAS begun to scare me…
I was told by the owner that he was going to eat a tub of crickets per day, but half of them are still left…
is he okay?
(sorry, forgot to say, its now three days later…)
